Gradients are good image substitutes!
You inspired me to come up with some random stuff.

Re: Gradients are good image substitutes!
I am having fun with them.
This skin is a super simple skin that starts with the "Spouzic-art" theme. It uses the gradients to put some "art" into the theme.

I like what you're doing with them. It would be neat to see what can be done with overlapping radial gradients, and maybe combine some of them with different angles of linear gradients.
SVG might be another option. Look what I just made.

Re: Gradients are good image substitutes!
The SVG option is one that I did here today. The odd part may be a simple lack of rest on my part. The image I used in the CSS wouldn't post on the message board, and the one I used for the message board wouldn't work in the CSS. The images are supposed to be the same, so I am a tad confused.

Re: Gradients are good image substitutes!
I explained this at RSF, but I'll add it here, too.
In the CSS, if you have single quotes in the URL itself, you need double quotes around it. If you have double quotes in the URL, you need single quotes around it.
In posts, URLs are automatically enclosed in double quotes in the underlying HTML, so you have to use single quotes in the URLs themselves instead of double quotes.
Basically, what you were doing was this:
"data:image/svg+xml;charset=utf8,%3Csvg xmlns="http...followed by whatever forever and ever...
Because the URL was enclosed in double quotes, the next double quote it ran into made it look like the end of the URL.
But if you do this:
"data:image/svg+xml;charset=utf8,%3Csvg xmlns='http...followed by whatever forever and ever...
...the single quote is considered part of the URL, and it keeps going until it gets to the next double quote, which signifies the end of the URL.

Explanations in multiple places is a good thing.
